Entry requirements to study in the USA from Bangladesh

U.S. universities make their own admission decisions. That means there is no nationwide minimum HSC GPA, bachelor’s CGPA, IELTS score, SAT score, or GRE score for international students.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Bangladeshi students usually apply after completing HSC, A-Levels or another accepted secondary qualification. Depending on the university and program, the application may include:

Do you need SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT?

Sangen Edu Ltd notes that undergraduate testing policies vary by institution. SAT and ACT remain common U.S. undergraduate admissions tests, but universities decide whether they require them. Graduate policies are similar. A business school may ask for GMAT or GRE. An engineering or science department may ask for GRE, make it optional, or not accept it at all. Do not take an expensive test simply because another student took it.

USA intakes for Bangladeshi students

U.S. universities usually organise admission around academic semesters. For Bangladeshi applicants, Fall is the main intake. Spring provides a useful second option, while Summer admission is more limited.

Fall intake

Fall usually has the widest choice of programs, scholarships, and assistantship opportunities. If you are targeting Fall, start early. Spring intake

Spring works well for students who are not ready for Fall. The trade-off is course availability. Some programs, particularly certain graduate or research programs, admit only for Fall. Check that before building your entire plan around January.

Summer intake

Summer admission exists, but it is much less common for full degree programs. Do not choose Summer simply because it is the earliest available date. Check the course structure, scholarship position, and visa timing first.

The U.S. application process can look complicated because universities use different systems. The basic sequence is still manageable.

Review your academic profile

Start with your SSC/HSC, A-Level or university results. Add your English level, study gap, work experience, research experience and budget. This is where a realistic shortlist begins.

Choose your course

Look at subjects before university names. Read the curriculum. Check whether the course is STEM-designated if that matters to your plans. Look at the degree duration and whether the program includes research, internship or thesis options.

Shortlist suitable universities

You can have ambitious options, but you also need universities where your academic profile and financial plan make sense. Compare tuition, estimated living expenses, scholarships and admission requirements.

Check tests and deadlines

Find out whether you need: IELTS / TOEFL / PTE / Duolingo, SAT / ACT, or GRE / GMAT. Deadlines can differ even within the same university. Scholarship deadlines may come earlier than the final admission deadline.

Prepare your documents

Collect academic records, passport, recommendation letters, CV where required, test scores and written application materials. Give yourself time for the SOP or essay. Generic writing copied across ten universities rarely helps.

Submit your university applications

Follow the application instructions of each institution. After submission, monitor your applicant portal and email. A university may request additional academic documents, proof of English, credential clarification or financial information.

Review admission and funding offers

An admission offer is only one part of the decision. Check the tuition, scholarship amount, assistantship if any, conditions and estimated annual cost. Compare the net cost, not the headline scholarship.

Complete financial documentation

After admission, your university will ask for the required financial documentation before issuing the ‘Form I-20’ (Certificate of eligibility for nonimmigrant student status). The amount you need to document depends on the university’s calculated cost and the funding shown for your study. UIC, for example, explicitly requires F-1 students to show access to sufficient funds for the academic period when requesting an I-20.

Pay SEVIS and complete the Visa application

Once you receive the I-20, the F-1 visa stage normally includes the I-901 SEVIS fee, DS-160 application, visa fee and interview preparation. We cover these in more detail below.

Prepare for departure

After receiving the visa, confirm housing, flight timing, university check-in and the documents you need at the U.S. port of entry. New F and M student visas can be issued up to 365 days before the course start date, but new students cannot enter the United States more than 30 days before their program begins.

There is no honest single answer to how much it costs to study in the USA from Bangladesh. The difference between a public university in a lower-cost city and an elite private university can be huge. There is no national fixed living-cost figure either. Boston, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area generally require a much larger budget than many smaller cities or towns. Other costs to plan for

Your USA study budget may also include visa and SEVIS fees, health insurance, books, flights, housing deposits, local transport, winter clothing in colder states, technology and personal expenses. USA student Visa from Bangladesh: F-1 Visa requirements

Most Bangladeshi students entering the USA for a full-time academic degree use the F-1 student visa. The visa stage begins after you have been admitted by an eligible institution and received your Form I-20.

A typical F-1 preparation file can include your passport, Form I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS payment receipt, visa-fee evidence, academic documents, test scores where relevant, financial evidence and supporting information connected with your study plan.

Form I-20

Your school issues the I-20 after completing its admission and financial-document process. Check the name, program, school, start date and financial information carefully before moving to the visa application.

I-901 SEVIS Fee

The current I-901 SEVIS fee for F and M students is $350. At approximately BDT 122.75 per USD, that is around BDT 42,960 before any payment or conversion charges.

F-1 Visa application fee

The current non-refundable U.S. student visa application fee is $185. That is approximately BDT 22,710 at the indicative exchange rate used on this page. Together, the current visa application fee and I-901 SEVIS fee total $535, excluding other application, travel or university costs.

Financial evidence for an F-1 Visa

There is no fixed U.S. bank-balance amount that applies to every Bangladeshi student. Your funding should be credible for the cost shown by the university and your study plan. Universities normally require financial documentation before issuing the I-20, and financial resources may also be relevant during the visa process.

Possible funding sources can include personal or family funds, scholarships, assistantships, approved sponsorship or other acceptable documented sources.

Do not create a bank statement around an arbitrary figure taken from an old article.

F-1 Visa interview

Your answer needs to make sense. Visa interview appointment times vary by location, season and visa category, so the U.S. The Department of State advises students to apply early.

Important F-1 status update – September 2026
DHS published a final rule in July 2026 that was scheduled to replace the traditional duration-of-status (D/S) framework with fixed admission periods for F-1 students. However, a U.S. federal court temporarily blocked implementation just before the scheduled date of 15 September 2026. As of September 2026, the existing D/S framework remains in place while the legal challenge continues.

Working while studying in the USA

An F-1 visa does not give unrestricted work permission. Eligible students can generally work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, subject to F-1 rules and university procedures. Different rules apply during authorised breaks and for off-campus employment.

Curricular practical training – CPT

CPT is practical training connected to the curriculum. It can include an internship, cooperative education or another approved work/study arrangement related to the program. The school’s Designated School Official plays an important role in CPT authorisation. F-1 students should never start off-campus practical training without the required approval.

Optional practical training – OPT

OPT allows eligible F-1 students to undertake practical training directly related to their major. Post-completion OPT can generally last up to 12 months.

STEM OPT extension

Students who complete an eligible STEM-designated degree and meet the other requirements may qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension.

That can provide up to 36 months of total post-completion practical training when standard OPT and STEM OPT are combined. The employer and student must meet the relevant STEM OPT rules.

Life in the USA as a Bangladeshi student

The first few months can involve more adjustment than students expect. The distance from Bangladesh is long. Weather can change dramatically between states. Public transport is strong in some cities and limited in others. Health insurance also needs more attention than many students are used to at home.

University residence halls can make the first semester easier, but off-campus housing may offer more choices later. Compare rent, transport and utility costs before signing anything. You will also need to adjust to a different academic system. Class participation, assignments, group projects, academic integrity rules and independent reading often carry significant weight. Ask for help early rather than waiting until exams.

খরচ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, কোর্স এবং শহরের ওপর নির্ভর করে। অনেক পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক শিক্ষার্থীদের বার্ষিক টিউশন প্রায় $30,000–$45,000 হতে পারে, আর শীর্ষ বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়-তে শুধু tuition-ই $60,000–$70,000+ হতে পারে। এর সঙ্গে বাসস্থান, খাবার, health insurance, বই ও যাতায়াতের খরচ যোগ হবে।

সব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে IELTS বাধ্যতামূলক নয়। অনেক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় TOEFL, PTE বা Duolingo English Test গ্রহণ করে, আবার কিছু ক্ষেত্রে অন্যভাবে English proficiency প্রমাণের সুযোগ থাকে। নির্দিষ্ট বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নিয়ম দেখে test নির্বাচন করা ভালো।

সব শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য এক নির্দিষ্ট bank balance নেই। সাধারণভাবে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের I-20 ও estimated cost of attendance অনুযায়ী tuition এবং living expenses বহন করার মতো বিশ্বাসযোগ্য financial evidence দেখাতে হয়।

F-1 status-এ eligible international students সাধারণত class চলাকালে on-campus সপ্তাহে সর্বোচ্চ 20 ঘণ্টা কাজ করতে পারে। CPT, OPT বা অন্য off-campus কাজের জন্য আলাদা নিয়ম ও অনুমোদন প্রয়োজন।

Eligible F-1 graduate সাধারণত 12 মাস OPT পেতে পারে। যোগ্য STEM degree থাকলে আরও 24 মাস STEM OPT extension পাওয়া যেতে পারে, অর্থাৎ কিছু শিক্ষার্থী মোট 36 মাস পর্যন্ত practical training-এর সুযোগ পেতে পারে।
