NTU is a famous and globally recognized co-educational research institution in Taipei, Taiwan. Taihoku Imperial University, founded in 1928 by the Japanese colonial authorities, was NTU's institutional forerunner. Shidehara Tan Tairaka Hiroshi was the first president. Taiwan was given up to the Nationalist government of China after the Republic of China won the war of resistance against Japan in 1945. Taihoku Imperial University was formally handed to the Chinese government on November 15, 1945, and renamed National Taiwan University.
